Famicom Version Metal Gear Was A... |

Shit Game. "クソゲー" Apparently, the game "Metal Gear" that was released in 1987 on the Nintendo Famicom system was a "shit game クソゲー(ム)". (Nintendo Famicom = Nintendo Family Computer, aka NES = Nintendo Entertainment System.) Not a very civil topic opener, but don't blame it on me, I am not the one who made the statement, I only repeated it. Well then, who is the bastard that said the Famicom version Metal Gear is a "shit game"? Before we answer that question, let us first take a look at just exactly what kind of game the Famicom version Metal Gear is. Let's go back in time, to a short while before the release of the Famicom version Metal Gear. The year is 1987, and a game called "Metal Gear" was released on the MSX2 game console. It is the debut game of a young game director named 小島秀夫 Kojima Hideo. Up to this point, action games had been all about shooting enemies, as it was the common sense. But the concept of this MSX2 version Metal Gear game was not about just shooting the enemies to advance, but was about hiding from the enemies to advance. It overturned the common sense of the time. A drastic conceptual revolution like this could result in two ways, either a colossal failure, or a monumental success. MSX2 version Metal Gear turned out to be the latter, and garnered both critical and commercial success. As a result, it was decided that this MSX2 version Metal Gear game will be ported to the Nintendo Family Computer game console. At the time, the Nintendo Famicom was the biggest and most popular game console in the market, it was only natural that a successful game would be ported to the more popular console. And thus, 5 months after the original MSX2 release, the Nintendo Famicom version of Metal Gear was released. (MSX2 version = 1987.07.12 | Famicom version = 1987.12.22) However, instead of being a faithful reproduction, the port made many many changes, some big, some small. Change, in itself, does not automatically mean bad, as long as the changes are good changes. The changes made to the Famicom version Metal Gear, incidentally, happened to be not good changes. Enemy placements were changed to odd positions, causing alterations to the game's infiltration concept. This is supposed to be a game with the objective of avoiding detection by the enemies, but it was changed to a game in which enemy detection became unavoidable. Most importantly, the Metal Gear tank itself is gone from the game. It was taken out. With the Metal Gear tank not present in the game, the game ceased to be "Metal Gear". The Famicom version Metal Gear became a game that is at the same time the same and different from the original MSX2 version Metal Gear. Why did this happen? Why did Director Kojima produce such a product? The truth is, Director Kojima had absolutely nothing to do with the production of the Famicom version Metal Gear. Which is quite a surprise, considering Mr Kojima is the birth father of the original MSX2 version Metal Gear. I would think he should have been a least a little bit involved with the porting process. But as it turned out, he had absolutely nothing to do with the port. It is a shock indeed. With knowledge of this shocking fact, let us return to the topic at hand, to just who exactly is this bastard that said the Famicom version Metal Gear was a shit game. Maybe you can guess it by now, after having read the above. The person who said the Famicom version Metal Gear was a shit game, was in fact, none other than, Mr Kojima Hideo himself. Link : http://www.konami.jp/gs/game/mgs_tts/japanese/limited_0206.html Quote : 「良くはなかった。いや、クソゲーでしたね(笑)。」 "It was not good. Well, it was a shit game (laughs)." No matter what, calling a game a "shit game" is a little bit over. But the man IS Kojima Hideo. The game must be a "shit game" then. Oh well. But, come to think of it, being the shit game that it is, the Famicom version Metal Gear is in fact quite important. Consider this, if the Famicom version Metal Gear never existed, there would have been no Metal Gear "series". According to Director Kojima, he had never intended on creating a sequel to the first Metal Gear. "Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake" was created as a response to the US release of the non-canonical Metal Gear game "Snake's Revenge". And "Snake's Revenge" was made because the NES version "Metal Gear" was a hit in the West. And the NES version "Metal Gear" existed only because the Famicom version "Metal Gear" existed. So really, the Famicom version "Metal Gear" was the catalyst for all the subsequent games. This theory is actually sound. If the Nintendo Famicom version "Metal Gear" was never released, then the overseas NES version "Metal Gear" would never have existed, and the follow up non-canon "Snake's Revenge" game would not have been made, then Mr Kojima Hideo would not have produced "Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake", and thus the continuation of the "Metal Gear Solid" series would not have been created. If we think of it this way, then the existence of the Famicom version "Metal Gear" is really a good thing. Because if the world didn't have the Famicom version "Metal Gear", then there would be no "Metal Gear Solid" series. Thank god for the Famicom Metal Gear shit game. 10.14.07 |
